The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has named Stephen Sundlof director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. He was previously a professor of toxicology at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine, and has chaired the Codex Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods since 1994.
The move comes following a report issued by the Administration, which identified an "eroded" scientific base and organizational structure within the organization. The report claims that crisis management activities at the Center have sapped resources away from its science base and infrastructure. The subcommittee concluded the result that "FDA's evaluation methods have remained largely unchanged over the last half century."
