The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) has announced that Rob Foxenberg is the first safety scientist specifically trained by the organization for the fragrance industry. Foxenberg will be joining RIFM member company Kimberly-Clark this Sept. Based on this year’s success, the RIFM Post Doctoral Program is continuing and RIFM is now interviewing for Foxenberg’s replacement. During his stay, Foxenberg learned various aspects of testing and safety assessment and spent time on respiratory, environmental and human health projects. He also had RIFM-supported “sabbaticals” to both supplier and finished goods companies, where he participated in the daily work of safety evaluation and regulatory affairs.
RIFM added the rotating postdoctoral scientist position in 2007 to provide training in fragrance safety for the industry. The program resulted from the RIFM board’s recognition that well-experienced safety scientists could best be prepared for industry positions by spending development time with RIFM staff and members. Individuals are selected for their formal educational background, preferably with a doctoral degree in toxicology, environmental science, biology or chemistry. The position is comparable to postdoctoral training or a research associateship within a non-laboratory organization.
