SC Johnson Reviews Galaxolide Synthetic Musk

After multiple requests, SC Johnson has agreed to carefully review the scientific data on the synthetic musk galaxolide. NGOs and scientists are concerned that it may be persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic. The company, signed by 20 scientists, sent a letter to Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE) in order to respond to the NGO's request for it to stop the use of the substance, which is found in a variety of SC Johnson's household products.

The director of reputation management, Ania Waszkiewicz, responded that the company would research the information that was highlighted in WVE in order to determine the safety of the product. Earlier, SC Johnson defended the use of the chemical in more than 80 household products, but it seems that the company has taken the chance to research its argument.

Possible Problem Causes Confusion in Company

Earlier this year, the vice president of global corporate affairs, communication and sustainability, Kelly Semrau, said that the company “vehemently disagrees with WVE's assertion that SC Johnson products contribute to high levels of galaxolide in aquatic life and waterways.”

Yet in a response from last week, Waszkiewicz stated that the company is very concerned with water and that it will take time for galaxolide to provide scientific evidence that either proves or disproves what the NGO believes.
