Firmenich Expands Sustainability Strategy

Firmenich (Geneva) announced, via its 2010 sustainability report, four new partnerships as part of its sustainability efforts. Based on its existing work sourcing sustainable vanilla from farmers in Uganda, which helps increase opportunities for the Ugandans, the company is extending the program to work with suppliers in Egypt, Madagascar and Haiti, all set to launch in fiscal 2011. In addition to vanilla, the program will now work with these countries’ suppliers to source ingredients of jasmine, violet, acacia, geranium, bitter orange and vetiver in a more sustainable fashion.

Additionally, Firmenich is working to build these types of relationships with sustainable suppliers in India, Guatemala, Malaysia and Indonesia, and the company’s 2010 sustainability report also noted a company aim of developing and commercializing only biodegradable perfumery ingredients in the future.
