According to these inventors, there is a need for esterquat compositions in a fabric conditioners that have a lower cost than, but equal softening and fragrance delivery performance to, known esterquat compositions.

As such, disclosed is a composition consisting of: a) an esterquat produced by the quaternized reaction of an alkanol amine and a fatty acid, wherein 90% to 100% w/w of the esterquat is triesterquat and 0% to 10% w/w is at least one monoesterquat or diesterquat; and b) a cationic surfactant.

Also described is a method of producing the composition and its use to soften fabric and increase fragrance delivery.
