The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently published a proposed rule that would update the list of North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes for facilities subject to reporting under the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI).
Facilities would have to begin using the 2007 classification codes for TRI reports that are due July 1, 2009. Those reports cover releases and other managed wastes for the 2008 calendar year. Comments on the proposed rule are due April 7, 2008.
Potentially affected by the rule are private sector businesses that have 10 or more full-time employees that manufacture, process or use toxic chemicals listed on the TRI.
NAICS is a system for classifying business establishments used by federal statistical agencies that collect or publish data by industry. It also is used by state agencies, trade associations, private businesses and other organizations. All facilities that report to TRI will still be required to report.
