What's the link between ancestry and region with our sense of taste and smell? The Flavor Quiz may tell us. Danielle R. Reed, Ph.D. associate director, of the Monell Chemical Senses Center, explains a new web-based platform to learn more about this unique relationship.
Introduced during the Monell Spring Colloquium, April 11-12, 2019, the Monell Flavor Quiz comes with 12 taste and smell samples where users input their data into a web interface. Currently, data has offered insight to bitter perception and its relation to geography and ancestry. The kit is still new and distributed to a small number of users within the flavor community; but Monell hopes to expand it more than a million users worldwide to understand taste and smell experiences.
"We don't really know that much about the global taste and smell across the world. So we really have no idea what people's experiences are worldwide."
