The GRAS Status of Ethyl Nitrite

Additionally, the organization released a statement regarding the GRAS status of ethyl nitrite.

“The FEMA GRAS status of ethyl nitrite (CAS 109-95-8; FEMA 2446) under the conditions of intended use as a flavor ingredient was reviewed by the FEMA Expert Panel. After reviewing the available information relevant to the FEMA GRAS status of ethyl nitrite, the Expert Panel concluded that additional data are required to support the continuation of GRAS status. Such data should include testing for vascular effects and GLP-compliant in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity testing of ethyl nitrite. Until such studies become available for review by the Expert Panel, the flavor ingredient ethyl nitrite has been removed from the FEMA GRAS list.”
