EFSA Issues Scientific Opinion on Sulfur-substituted Furan Derivatives

The European Food Safety Authority has issued a scientific opinion on sulfur-substituted furan derivatives used as flavoring agents evaluated by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). The opinion concludes, "For 24 of the 33 JECFA evaluated sulphur-substituted furan derivatives the Panel agrees with JECFA conclusion 'No safety concern at estimated levels of intake as flavouring substances' based on the MSDI approach." As a result, the organization seeks additional information on the nine outstanding materials.
