EFSA Reports on 21 Flavorings

The European Food Safety Administration's (EFSA) panel on food contact materials, enzymes, flavorings and processing aids has released its findings (evaluation 9, revision 4) on 21 flavoring substances belonging to chemical groups eight, 25 and 30.

The group contains secondary alicyclic saturated and unsaturated alcohols, ketones, one hemiketal ester and esters containing secondary alicyclic alcohols. Thirteen of the flavoring substances have been reported to occur naturally in a wide range of food items. The present revision of the group includes the assessment of four additional flavoring substances: p-menthan-3-one, 2,6,6- trimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-one, l-piperitone and menthol 1-and 2-propylene glycol carbonate, which were all considered to be safe.

Out of the 21 substances evaluated, the panel is requesting additional toxicity data on one substance, cyclotetradecanone. To view the full report, click here.
