Symrise, (Holziminden, Germany) received two sustainability awards at the German Awards for Excellence. The company was recognized for two awards in the responsible sourcing and life cycle assessment categories.

“We want to be a role model, both for other companies and our own employees." - Dr. Helmut Frieden

A panel of four experts recognized Symrise’s responsible sourcing model as the best of all submitted. Responsible sourcing refers to management that upholds social responsibilities to both the ethical and environment impact in the supply chain. Specifically, the judging panel was impressed with the sustainable cultivation of vanilla in Madagascar through Symrise. For this project, they built a vanilla extraction facility right in Madagascar to reduce transporting distances, emissions and add value to the region.

“These awards, along with the responses from our customers and other stakeholders, show that we are on the right path,” said Dr. Helmut Frieden, vice president, corporate sustainability, who accepted the awards at the DQS conference in Düsseldorf, Germany. “We want to be a role model, both for other companies and our own employees, and inspire them to even higher levels of sustainability management.”

Symrise received the award in the life cycle assessment category for its approach in analyzing environmental impacts from raw material cultivation to product formulation. Certification company DQS created a scorecard to assess the relevant impacts of these processes to provide a scientifically sound analysis. This process allows the company to pick and choose which options are best for reducing the company's ecological footprint.
