Ha'aretz and a number of other Israeli papers are reporting that Frutarom's facility in the Haifa Bay area is suspected by the Environmental Protection Ministry of emitting irritants that have been blamed for eye irritation and shortness of breath among area residents. At press time, no chemicals or quantities involved have been determined. The problem, authorities say, has been compounded by the unrelated illegal burning of plastic and tires in the area. Frutarom denies any improper emissions and states that it has complied fully with the Ministry and its directives. Company executives are to be summoned for a hearing on Sunday and could face disciplinary actions such as a plant shutdown or even revocation of its license.
