In an attempt to balance increasing consumer demands for ingredient transparency with the fragrance industry's intellectual property concerns, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) will publish a list of fragrance ingredients used in consumer goods (based on a 2008 survey) on its Web site by the end of 2009. The alphabetized list will include natural and synthetic materials and CAS numbers. The contents will be updated as new materials are added to companies' palettes.

Of the move, IFRA's director general, Jean-Pierre Houri said, “The publishing of the IFRA list of ingredients is aligned with industry’s efforts to be more transparent while at the same time protecting proprietary details of the specific fragrance formulae. Our actions also demonstrate the responsibility and accountability of the fragrance industry and our commitment to communicate our extensive safety program.”
