According to these inventors, currently, fragrance ingredients are produced via three routes: a) extraction from plants or animals, b) total chemical synthesis from petrochemicals, and c) fungal biotransformation of oleochemicals. Furthermore, a fragrance obtained from a plant or animal is considered a natural fragrance, and as such, is in high consumer demand and commands premium prices.
However, supply is limited as these compounds usually exist only in minute quantities in sometimes rare plants or wild animals. In addition, their characters strongly dependence on factors that are difficult to control, for example, the influence of weather and the risk of plant disease.
The present disclosure therefore relates to processes that combine the microbial production of organic intermediates with subsequent synthetic transformations. This provides compounds of industrial value.
