Patent Pick: New Nanoparticles Drive the Fragrance Delivery Truck

Fragrance-truck-300

As FedEx and UPS demonstrate, not only are delivery routes crucial to getting the job done, so are the drivers themselves. And a new invention from the paint industry steers this metaphor into the fragrance field using nanoparticles.

Nano-particulate capsules and emulsions including fragrance

According to these inventors, one strategy to fragrance consumer products is by mixing the scent directly into the product. However, if the fragrance material is too volatile, it is lost during manufacturing, storage and use. Slow or sustained release is preferred.

Encapsulation is one way to improve the stability of fragrances or flavors and control their release. It also can improve the substantivity of molecules to a substrate.

In relation, described here is a nano-particulate composition including one or more hydrophobic core materials and a polymeric shell. Said shell consists of a homo-polymer or copolymers of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer or mixtures thereof. The overall particle size distribution averages from 50 nm to 1,000 nm.

This composition is paired with a controlled release delivery system that can protect and release the fragrance in a controlled manner over time. This combination can be used in fragranced products, including water-based coating/paint formulations, textiles, cosmetics, soaps, detergents and more.
