Fragrance? As an anti-aging ingredient? According to this patent application from Beiersdorf—yes. Alkylamidothiazoles paired with certain fragrances have been found to lighten up pigmented spots and under-eye circles, as well as reduce inflammation.

According to these inventors, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation often occurs in darker skin types; for example, Pseudofolliculitis barbae in black men can lead to uneven pigmentation. Forms of melasma, which occur particularly in Asian women on the face and décolletage area, are also types of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Even dark circles around the eyes are considered a form of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Many of these cases are increased further by the action of UV light. Active ingredients and formulas are known to address skin pigmentation but many have side effects. The present invention therefore aims to improve upon the prior art.
The inventors have discovered that ingredient combinations of alkylamidothiazoles and one or more specific fragrances provide the desired effects. A multitude of fragrances are named in the patent application, ranging from coumarin, bitter orange oil, hydroxycitronellal and bergamot oil, to ethyllinalool, amyl cinnamaldehyde, cardamom oil, lavender oil, Tonka bean oil and more.
Specifically, preparations are outlined wherein the total amount of the fragrances is most preferably 0.01% to 5.0% w/w in cosmetic preparations.
