Patent Picks are chosen by the editors from publicly available sources. Today's highlight relates to a process for hydrogenating γ,δ-unsaturated ketones for use as flavor and fragrances.

Hydrogenation of ketones having at least a carbon-carbon double bond in the γ,δ-position
U.S. Patent 9181163
Publication date: Nov. 10, 2015
Assignee: DSM IP Assets B.V.

This invention relates to a process for the hydrogenation of ketones having at least a carbon-carbon double bond in the γ,δ-position to the keto group by hydrogen in the presence of at least one chiral iridium complex. According to the inventors, it has been shown that this process leads to a strong increase in the preferential formation of a single isomer.

The process is particularly suitable for the hydrogenation of γ,δ-unsaturated ketones that can be used as flavors and fragrances, or for the preparation of vitamin E and its derivatives, or of flavors and fragrances.
