Cover Story: Leaf Alcohol Preparation
By: Eliska Leitmannova and Libor Cerveny, Institut…
cis-Hex-3-en-1-ol and trans-hex-3-en-1ol are called leaf alcohols, though their aromas resemble freshly cut grass. Perfumers define their aroma more precisely: cis-hex-3-en-1-ol has powerful and intensely green grassy odor.1 Traces of cis-hex-3-en-1-ol are used in refreshing top notes in delicate floral fragrance types such as muguet and lilac; in addition, the alcohol is often used alongside geranium oil, galbanum, oakmoss, lavender and mint oils.

Technical and Philosophical Notes on the Perfumery Creative Process
By: Arcadi Boix Camps, Auram Art & Perfume
Lessons derived from global scent tracking—Brazil, Vietnam, the Middle East and beyond. Since my arrival in Brazil at age 20, I realized that creativity is just the ability to make, or otherwise bring into existence, something new, be it new solutions to a problem, a new method or device, or a new artistic object or form. This realization was an inducement to action, an essential and continuing tension between environmental constancies and the interruption of equilibrium in the interest of new possibilities of experience.

Fragrance Creation: Gardenia in Perfumery
By: Arcadi Boix Camps, Auram Art & Perfume
The beginning of a career, discovery of new materials and creating the scent of gardenia. An Education in Raw Materials. At the time I was beginning my career, bureaucracy loomed over the horizon, though the hysteria of the time cannot compare to today.

Topics in Perfumery: Saffron in Perfumery and Flavors
By: Arcadi Boix Camps, Auram Art & Perfume
A meditation on the art and science of flavor and fragrance creation. My friends often tell me that I do not look my age. Maybe they do it to please or flatter me, but may be it is true.

Topics in Perfumery: Magnolia and Lily of the Valley
By: Arcadi Boix Camps
A continuing meditation on the art, craft, materials and techniques of fragrance creation. I have thought quite often that I am lucky because I live on the outskirts of Barcelona. Visitors believe that Barcelona is very beautiful—and it really is—but unfortunately most people just visit downtown.

Identification of Iris Scent Volatiles Using Dynamic Headspace with PDMS Foam Trapping and GC-TOFMS
By: Ray Marsili and Cesar Kenaan
The importance of when and how fragrance chemicals are extracted in order to accurately reconstitute the scent of a flower. The alluring fragrances of flowers are the primary inspiration for new perfumes. In the quest to develop novel synthetic aroma chemicals, perfumers have increasingly relied upon the assistance of analytical chemists to help them identify major chemicals responsible for floral fragrances.

Formulating with Citrus: New Developments in Citrus Fragrance Ingredients
By: Michael Britten-Kelly
The aroma chemical aspects and new discoveries in both natural and synthetic citrus ingredients. Of all the ingredients on the perfumer's palette, surely none are more instantly recognizable to the public than those in the citrus category. Fresh juicy oranges, sulfurous tangy grapefruit, tart puckery lemons and heady sweet limes all bring to mind a host of pleasant associations in which taste and smell play an equal part.
