The most recent addition to the citrus family, the grapefruit was relatively unknown to both Eastern and Western civilizations until its discovery in Barbados in 1750. Since then, it has spread to tropical and sub-tropical regions throughout the Western Hemisphere, and is renowned for its distinctive, sweet-sour flavor. Here, the authors review the similarities between the grapefruit and its larger ancestor, the pummelo, and examine grapefruit oil components and their distinct flavor profiles.

Perfumers complain when a shortage of a product interferes with their research. Sporadic demand and lack of regular outlets for a product causes this. Cooperation between producers and consumers of fragrance materials could lead to research on and development of certain plants that would be very useful for perfumery to the benefit of both. Egypt, bemuse of the regularity of the climate, richness of the land, and large labor concentration, would be fitted for this cooperation.
Nationalization of industry in Poland after World War II included the perfumery and cosmetics industry. The first period in the development of this industry was characterized by the import of raw materials, mostly from France, but the increasing demand for perfumery materials provided the impulse to establish a national industry in this area. Toward this purpose, a plant was constucted in Warsaw in 1956. During the period from 1960 to 1904, this plant was enlarged and modernized. Now under the name of Perfumery Synthetic Factory, “Pollens-Aroma,” this is one of sixteen plants belonging to the Industrial Association of Detergents and Cosmetics (Zjednoczenie Przemyslu Chemii Gosuodarwei), which is organized under the Ministry- of the Chemical Industry.
The African continent has become one of the most important poduction areas for a number of key fragrance and flavor materials. If we consider the vast resources of labor, the many types of climate, and the low investment for essential oil production, it seems certain that other African countries besides those mentioned, might join the ranks of producers for this industry.
In 1946 the Scientific Committee began the compilation of a set of monographs embodying the EOA standards for essential oils, aromatic chemicals and isolates, and related flavor and perfume materials. Approximately 300 of these have now been completed. They have been prepared by the scientific representative of the member companies, based on the analyticaI data and experience of their laboratories. They are intended to define realistically standard good quality material currently avaiIable commercially, and should provide fair standards for the evaluation of these materials in commercial transactions.
A short symposium was held by the Essential Oil Association on the problems affecting manufacturers and their supplies of both natural and synthetic raw materials. Four reports were given on various aspects of this subject and are summarized below:
