The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) has released an infographic showing how flexible packaging helps preserve food and prevent food waste.

The article cites a U.S. Department of Agriculture finding that 40% of food is not consumed, which equates to over 36 million tons or $162 billion dollars’ worth of food.  Among the reason for the waste include a short shelf life. The infographic shows how product shelf lives can be extended with flexible packaging.

Among some of the examples of extended shelf lives include:

  • Green beans from 7 to 19 days
  • Grapes from 7 to 70 days
  • Broccoli from 6 to 20 days
  • Steak from 3 to 20 days
  • Cheese from 190 to 280 days
