European Food Safety Authority Releases Test Findings on 62 Flavoring Materials

The Panel of Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids concluded testing of 62 substances belonging to chemical groups 9, 13, 30. A 63rd [FL-no: 10.170] raised concerns for genotoxicity. The panel, at the request of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), examined structure-activity relationships, intake, toxicological threshold and data on how these chemicals break down in the body. The materials in question are alcohols, aldehydes, acetals, carboxylic acids and esters containing additional oxygenated functional groups and lactones.
In the final evaluation, 58 of the substances were t to present any safety risk at the levels at which they’re consumed based on Maximized Survey-derived Daily Intakes (MSDI). Among the remaining four, there was insufficient information on composition of mixture and / or stereoisomerism. For full abstract, read here.
