According to a spokeswoman for Health Minister Tony Clement, the Canadian Government soon plans to introduce the "Canadian Consumer Product Safety Act." While the full text of the legislation is not yet available, some of the proposed changes are included in the discussion paper: "Strengthening and Modernizing Canada's Safety System for Food, Health and Consumer Products." In the discussion paper, the government highlights several new measures it hopes to introduce to improve the safety of consumer products, food and drugs. This includes new guidance to the industry to reinforce product safety, creating new authorities that require suppliers to report health and safety related product defects and adverse incidents and strengthening the government's authority to verify food safety before it is imported into the country. The government also plans to increase information sharing with China and wants to identify potentially harmful products before they enter Canada.
