Starbucks Coffee Company has announced the arrival of Starbucks Blonde Espresso, making it the first new espresso option in 40 years.

Subtle and Sweet

Citing rising demands for espresso beverages, Starbucks has tested the blonde espresso in international markets since 2013 and more recently in Canada, before finally introducing it to the U.S. This new beverage joins Starbucks’ portfolio of lighter roasts, which contains a balanced and subtly sweet taste profile.

“We set the standard for a dark, boldly roasted coffee and in this case, we broke a few of our own rules by taking a lighter approach to espresso which created a bright taste with sweet citrus notes and a smooth body,” said Andrew Linnemann, VP of global coffee for Starbucks. “We are really proud of the roast and think customers are going to love experimenting with it.”

Cup of Joe Revised

This beverage comes at a time of increased diversification in the coffee beverage market. Leading the charge is cold brew beverages. From 2015-2017 the cold brew coffee market has grown to an estimated $38.1 million value. Cold brew has even reached beyond coffee to include teas and even cocoa.

In addition to finding cooler ways to get their caffeine, consumers are looking for coffee beverages that provide an experience. Consumers are trying matcha, beetroot, rose, avocado and lavender lattes, primarily for its aesthetic appeal and health benefits.
