Sabinsa Corp. (Piscataway, New Jersey) has received GRAS status for its branded superfruit ingredient Saberry—a proprietary, patent pending extract of fruits of Emblica officinalis Gaertn, more commonly known as Indian gooseberry or Amla. The certification, which was granted after a comprehensive review of safety and toxicology data by an independent panel of scientists, allows the company to add the ingredient in a variety of foods and beverages such as baked goods, milk products, jams and jellies, gelatins and puddings, soups, snacks, candy, sugar, non-alcoholic beverages and even instant tea and coffee.
Of this development, Shaheen Majeed, marketing director of Sabinsa said, “We are excited to introduce Amla to the world market backed by research and processing expertise that brings its applications to a whole new level. Our research efforts established correct biomarkers, and now we can enter the functional food side with certainty of safety for our Saberry ingredient.”
