4-Terpinenol

4-Terpinenol (FEMA# 2248, CAS# 562-74-3), also occasionally referred to as 4-carvomenthenol or paramenth-1-en-4-ol, has a powerful spicy aroma that is very reminiscent of nutmeg, and can be seen as important within the more herbal profile of marjoram.

A significant level of this chemical is present in a large number of herb and spice essential oils, which would seem to indicate a wide range of possible uses but mostly confined to the category of spices and seasonings. In reality, this ingredient can also play a highly useful, if sometimes secondary, role in a very wide range of different flavor types, especially in citrus and berry.
