IFRANA Educates through “A Symphony of Senses”

Posted: November 25, 2013

Award-winning perfumers, members of congress, industry CEOs and the International Fragrance Association North America (IFRANA) gathered on Capitol Hill on Nov. 13 for a  “A Symphony of Senses,” in which new and unique scents were especially created for the evening of music, scents, and senses.

“A Symphony of Senses celebrated the unique art of perfumery and the artists who compose the scents,” said Jennifer Abril, president, IFRA NA, “Everyone has a favorite scent or perfume, but rarely do they stop to think about the artistry and science that goes into creating the scent. If you’ve ever wondered how classical music, 80’s alternative rock or today’s pop translates into a perfume, this was truly a once in a lifetime experience for the more than 200 attendees,” added Abril.

Perfumer Calice Becker, who is vice president, executive perfumer VP at Givaudan in New York, designed the scent representing classical music. Perfumer Christopher Diienno, a perfumer at drom in New York, used Depeche Mode, New Order and The Cure as the inspiration to create a scent representing 1980’s alternative rock. Diienno is the president of the American Society of Perfumers and has served on its board of directors since 2009. Perfumer Heather Sims created a scent to correspond with Justin Timberlake’s recent Suit & Tie album. A chemistry-trained, career perfumer, Sims is the director of perfumery at Arylessence Inc. in Marietta, Georgia.
